Angus Cattle

The Angus breed originated in Scotland and was brought to the United States in 1873. Black Angus are black and polled, meaning they have no horns. They are popular because they have easy calving (giving birth) and high growth rates, and are low maintenance and hearty. They have recently become the most popular breed of cow in the United States.

Pineland Farms acquired the Black Angus beef herd in 2001. They were bred and raised by Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. Pineland Farms uses their cows to create breeding stock for other herds around the United States. The cows are artificially inseminated (AI) so the livestock manager can pick from a variety of bulls out of a catalog for select traits. Bull semen arrives in the mail! It is collected, frozen and divided into straws. These straws are loaded in a breeding gun and then injected into the cow.

Angus cow uses:  breeding, meat and leather.
